Cartomancy is a method of telling the future with a regular deck of playing cards as opposed to a deck of tarot cards. Cartomancy has been practiced since the 14th century and its practitioners are often referred to as cartomancers. Cartomancers prefer that the 52-card deck used for readings not be used for any other purpose because the cards are viewed as a tool and should be respected. For these reasons, they also frown upon anyone else touching their cards.

Each card in the suit has a different meaning. For hearts, the ace means happiness, love and friendship. The King is both affectionate and generous, the Queen is trustworthy and the Jack is a good friend. But for Spades, the face cards are quite different. The King is ambitious and successful, the Queen is seductive and the Jack is well meaning. The King of Diamonds is obstinate and powerful, the Queen of Diamonds is enticing and witty, and the Jack of Diamonds is someone you cannot trust. For Clubs, the King is open and honest, the Queen is strong and helpful, and the Jack is dependable. The 2 of Hearts means success, but the 2 of Spades is scandal and gossip. Many cards are related to romance including the 8 of Diamonds, the 2 of Diamonds, and the 9 of Clubs.

Combinations of cards also have special meanings as does each suit. The suit of Clubs often shows how much energy one uses to get exactly what they want. It also shows obstacles that will occur and gives insight as to how to deal with those obstacles. Sometimes, a Club card is meant as a sign to slow down and save your energy. Astrological signs rule each suit and Aries, Sagittarius, and Leo rule Clubs.

Hearts shows a person what is in their heart. It speaks of relationships, both good and bad, and may even tell you the areas in which you are vulnerable. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rule the Hearts suit.

Spades can show you roadblocks to success, including repeating patterns of behavior that prevent you from achieving your dreams. Spades, ruled by Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, may lead you to make difficult changes. Spades is often seen as the less than positive suit because it can include many hurtful things. Finally, Diamonds is the suit that deals with both emotions and finances. These cards show what gives you pleasure as well as comfort. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn rule the suit of Diamonds. Diamonds often make you reconsider your work values, including the ambitions and responsibilities that go with them as well as your health issues.
