I think I will start this newsletter with humble gratitude.
Thank you so very much for your gracious and continued support. Your efforts have made a significant difference to the Library overall. And I have no doubt that our audience has gotten significant value from your efforts already.
Your value as an Esoteric Library author remains unrivalled on our site..
So this month I though I might offer a few very useful tips. Little things I have learnt over many years experimenting online, starting with:...
How to hide from spammers
One of the biggest problems online is the continuous onslaught of email spam. You have a submission form on your site. You will know what I am talking about. And of course do not think publishing your email address is a good idea either.
Though how else are your real customers supposed to get a hold of you...
In almost all instances of spamming, the permanent solution is not based on where the emails come from, but rather where spammers get the email addresses from. If we prevent them from mining our email addresses, we wont be getting their rubbish in our inboxes.
How?... you ask.
You can publish your email address, though might I suggest you apply one of the following simple fixes.
Replace the @ sign and the dot with something like [AT] and [DOT]. Most spammers are unable to thoroughly mine addresses in this format. (estimated 85% efficiency).
Put your email in a jpeg. Yes, put your email in picture and display it on your site as such. (Estimated efficiency 99%.)
Of course also remembering that if you are using an active link (a href) tag, this needs to be removed for these above fixes to work.
Also keep in mind that someone that really wants to get in touch with you, will be happy to type your email address from either.
When using some kind of web contact form.
This is unfortunately slightly more complex, and requires some special programming, however the best solution here is to add a security (or human verification) question. This can be in the form of an image with text on, or perhaps a simple math question. In both instances this should totally eliminate your web form spam. It most certainly has for me.
And of course I do realise that not all of you are your own webmasters, however you might be surprised how few of the webmasters out there know even these most basic of fixes. So control your spam, and instruct your webmaster to implement at least one of these fixes to your contact page, and see your spam vanish.
And just for your own sanity, might I suggest that you change your email address (or use a different address), after implementing this fix, as this will mean you can see the real benefits of these fixes.
So here is hoping that your spam problems are in the past.
And of course, keep on doing what you do best. Inform, Teach and Share. Only together can we make a larger change.
Thanks again for your support.
Wishing you all the best and Kind Regards.
