The literal translation of the word reincarnation is “to be made flesh again.” This is the belief that part of a human (the soul or spirit) survives death and is reborn in a new body. While the soul or spirit may take on a new personality in the new body, it still has some consistencies with the past lives as well. Reincarnation is a major part of many religions including Sikhism, Hinduism, Spiritism, various African religions, and Jainism. Some contemporary Pagans as well as New Age enthusiasts believe in reincarnation as well. Buddhists also believe in a form of reincarnation, but it differs slightly as their belief is of rebirth, not actual reincarnation.
The belief in reincarnation has been around since ancient times. The Egyptians were known for burying their dead with items they would need in an afterlife. The Hindus believe that reincarnation is linked with karma – the belief that what one does in this life will be carried into the next. So any sins you commit in this life, you will have to pay for in the next life. This being the case, Hindus seek to commit good deeds and acts, so their reincarnation will be a better life. Many, especially those who are downtrodden and handicapped, find the thought of reincarnation to be one of great comfort.
How does one know if they have been reincarnated? How do they find out about their past lives? Many times, it may be as simple as an odd feeling one feels when they see something for the first time. They make feel like they have been there before or know something about the place, even though this is their first visit. Some people have reoccurring dreams that tell of their past lives.
Another way to find out about past lives is through hypnosis. It is believed that by reaching an unconscious state, people can recall their past lives and experiences. Many people suffering from physical problems often find through hypnosis that the ailment is associated with a past life. For reasons unknown, when information about the past life is discovered, the ailment often disappears. People may also be able to reach the past life knowledge through meditation. However, with meditation, it may take years to achieve a deep enough trance to be able to gain the insight desired.
One person often in the spotlight for their belief in reincarnation is actress Shirley Maclaine. Her past lives include that of a geisha, a Moorish girl, and an orphan among others and she has written several books on the subject.
