Telepathy is the ability to communicate without using the standard methods of speech or body language. Because standard methods of communication are not used, telepathy is often referred to as a form of extra-sensory perception because it only exists only in the mind. There are different forms of telepathy: the communication of feeling, the communication of emotion or images, and the communication of words and/or phrases.

Feeling is the easiest form of telepathy to notice with it even being found in animals. The hardest is the communication between two people of words and/or phrases. This type of telepathy does not normally come naturally and must be something that is learned through training.

One of the first institutes to do research involving telepathy was the Society for Psychical Research in Cambridge, England. It was here that the word “telepathy” was first used in 1886 to describe this phenomenon of what was previously referred to as “thought transference.” By 1917, telepathy research had come to the United States. John E. Coover at Stanford University began testing participants claiming to have telepathic abilities using playing cards. However, he did not find the results to be significant enough to prove their abilities. In 1927, J. B. Rhine of Duke University began using Zener cards to test study participants. One of the most important books concerning telepathy is Mental Radio written by Upton Sinclair. He talks about his wife’s telepathic abilities in being able to reproduce sketches he was doing at the same time while several miles away. Today, rather than use Zener cards, many parapsychologists use what is call free response, allowing the study participant to zero in on anything instead of the predefined cards.

Telepathy can occur when the subjects are awake, but many researchers have also found that subjects have the ability to see things in their sleep. In experiments to test this, a receiver subject is set up in one room, hooked to both a machine to test EEG patterns and rapid eye movement (REM). A sender is set up in a separate room and is instructed to send a randomly selected image to the receiver while he or she is in a dream state. Once the receiver is awake, they are asked what they remember from their dreams. Research sometimes suggests that there can be a connection between what the sender was thinking about and what was in the receiver’s dreams.

Many believe the telepathy is achieved by connecting on the same frequency, much like tuning a radio. You can achieve telepathy through meditation and focus and the more you practice, the better you are at it.
