Magick, spelt with the terminal "k" to differentiate it from stage magic, has been described as the art of bringing about change in accordance with your will. However, the secrets of magick have often been unnecessarily complicated or kept hidden away from public view amidst claims of these things being too dangerous for all but a select few.

The truth is, the secrets of magick are hidden by virtue of them being occult or esoteric in nature. The genuine secrets cannot be simply revealed in a book or spoken of in a secretive meeting. Magick must be experienced, for it is a living process of transformation. The so-called secrets are discovered through putting various principles into practice and reflecting on the processes involved and the consequences that occur.

Too many aspiring mages get caught up in the glamour and external symbolism of magick and sorcery. They become obsessed with learning how to pronounce magick words correctly, learn the true name of God, or discover the most power sigil to construct. They like the feel of identifying as a mage, a wizard, a sorcerer, or a witch, but they do not genuinely understand the deeper workings of magick. While they may perfect their ritual performance and adorn their altar with exquisite symbols and tools, they lack the knowledge of the underlying processes that actually make magick work.

All magick has an internal component - it is through the mind (the psyche) that transformation is brought about. Magick can be performed via a meditative process such as "astral projection" or it may be via ritual or ceremonial work. Both these types of magick require internal processes to be occurring, such as engaging the imagination and focusing the will to direct the energies in such a manner as to bring about change. In fact, it is possible to work magick without any external props or physical performance.

To learn magick effectively you gain knowledge of certain things, to develop an understanding of how magick brings about change in the physical world. To begin with, examining beliefs you hold about magick will help you break through the blockages that limit your success. Learning to harness your imagination and focus your will is necessary to direct the energies that bring about transformation. Discovering what is important, and what is window-dressing, is all that is necessary to develop your basic skills in magick, and with those skills you can start to become a master of your own destiny.
