Many people crave a long, intense foot massage at the end of a tiring day. As it happens those soothing massages are good for a lot more than simple pain relief in our feet. Reflexology studies show how we may treat many organic illnesses with foot, hand, or ear massages.

Reflexology is the study of reflexes in the nervous system that may be applied to healing organic diseases. In some respects, therapeutic treatments based on reflexology superficially resemble acupressure treatments, because the two treatment regimens are very similar. Both regimens activate specific areas of the body remotely with massage or steady pressure to more accessible parts of the body. In the case of reflexology specifically, nerves in the ears, hands, and feet are stimulated to provide treatment.

Reflexology therapies are based upon the theory that the nerves in the feet, hands and eyes all map directly or indirectly to all other regions of the body, such that specific locations on any of these extremities may all be related to different organic systems and muscle groups.

By applying pressure or massage to particular regions of the feet, hands, or ears, the reflexive behavior of the nervous system triggers stimulation to corresponding parts of the body such as the bowels, sinuses, throat, etc.

The stimulating effects of pressure or massage to specific regions of the feet, hands, or ears may therefore be redirected by reflexes of the nervous system to other regions of the body to stimulate healing processes and provide relief for a wide variety of illnesses related to organic or muscular diseases or dysfunctions.

Typical reflexology treatments begin with stimulating the cardiac and endocrine system functions. This is to improve overall circulation of the blood and lymphatic systems to help flush out toxins released during therapy. Next, the activation points for the kidneys and liver are stimulated to help remove these toxins from the body.

With the avenues for flushing out toxins activated, the reflexologist may then proceed to treat specific problem areas.

Reflexology treatments are typically concluded by repeating the initial stimulation of the kidneys, liver, heart, and endocrine systems. This is to reinforce the processes whereby toxins are released to prevent these toxins from being re-absorbed in other regions of the body where they might otherwise cause new disease symptoms.

Charts describing the specific mapping of regions of each foot, hand, or ear to specific areas of the body such as the lungs, eyes, or stomach, are readily available, as are books describing how to diagnose and treat a wide variety of common medical conditions that are considered to be highly responsive to reflexology therapies. Sources for these reference materials include the internet, bookstores, and health food stores.

Regular use of reflexology has shown success in treating many conditions, such as asthma or hypertension. With the possible exception of some congenital, genetically predetermined diseases, reflexology may prove useful in the treatment of all kinds of illnesses, and may often at least provide relief from symptoms in the case of those congenital diseases that may be resistant to regularly applied reflexology treatments.

Reflexology should not be used as a substitute for necessary medication or other medical therapy regimens such as therapy regimens for diabetes; however, reflexology can be remarkably helpful as an adjunctive, supporting therapy for diabetes as well as many other medical problems.

To your good health!
