According to both traditions of Celtic geomancy, and Native American medicine wheel, the sacred circle contains the heart or energetic center, (usually the place of the altar) with the boundaries surrounding and protecting this most holy place. Allowing entry in or out of this circle, are the gateways, usually oriented to the four directions. This archetypal symbol of the circle with the cross connecting the gateways is deeply embedded into our psyche and when these rules are followed, they create a deep sense of order and harmony in any environment.|
And while this is true of the home, it is also found in cities, even in whole countries. One example I recently discovered while in the process of preparing for an upcoming tour of Australia, was that the whole continent followed this pattern of the Celtic Cross.
The sacred center, in the case of Australia, is the place most venerated by the Aboriginal people, Uluru (Ayers Rock) right in the heart of the continent. This protrusion of rock mysteriously jutting up from nowhere, like an altar provided by Nature Herself, is surrounded by the boundary, the circle surrounding the Celtic Cross, or the wheel of the medicine wheel, the boundary of the country itself. Viewed from this perspective, the whole of Australia is one giant medicine wheel. The “gateways” (in this case aligned with the four directions) are the key entry points in and out of the country: Sydney to the east, Melbourne to the south, Perth to the west, and Darwin at the north. In this model, the health and proper functioning of the gateways play an important role in the health of the region, as they allow the energies in and out of the boundaries into the center.
Consider what has happened to the planet’s “gateways” since 9-11. Since that time, most of the planetary "gateways" (airports, customs, harbors) of have been increasingly dominated by fear and control for "security" reasons. Energetically, when the gateways are shut, the land or region cannot benefit from the inflow of higher vibrational frequencies coming in, and the benefits of the energetic center cannot reach beyond the region as well. It is interesting to note that the symbol of Australia is the Southern Cross, the symbol created if you connect each of the gateways of a medicine wheel to one another. Did the early settlers of that ancient continent know something we have forgotten?
Installing “Guardians of the Gates” for Your Home:
The following technique is adapted from the DIY Space Clearing Kit, by Christan Hummel.
Just as the energetic gateways of communities and countries are important, of equal importance are the gateways of our homes and gardens, and the energetic “gatekeepers” that stand watch over them.
One can hardly pass a garden these days without seeing a statue of St. Francis, Buddha, Quan Yin or another religious figure installed there. Perhaps unknowingly, the owners have created a “guardian” of their property by installing such figures. Despite the country, religion or culture, as you begin to look for them, you will find these “guardians of the gates” wherever you go.
Gateways of all types are important to the energy flow of a property and a home. Many of the temple builders throughout the world understood the importance of these gateways, and consequently often installed temple guardians at the gateways to the property or building. Perhaps the most famous and obvious temple guardians are those found guarding the Egyptian temples. Hovering up to 50 feet tall in some cases, these “guardians” surely would have intimidated any who entered.
In the Christian churches and Cathedrals, one finds Mother Mary, or Archangel Michael standing watch over the temple gates. Often when entering Indian homes there are elaborate mandalas on the ground at the entryway.
In China, the lion is the traditional temple guardian, holding a specific symbol, the Flower of Life, in his paw. In India, the doorways are protected with sacred symbols that act as the temple “guardians” transforming any harmful energy before they are permitted to enter the temple. In the Jewish tradition, the mezuzah, a scroll with biblical passages on one side and a name of God on the other, is attached to doorways of houses and temples to “initiate” those who enter the property.
Associated with each of these figures there is a devic being that will obey the intentions of its owner. Symbols too can be used in this manner. You can use any symbol that has significance to you.
When installing your own “guardians of the gate,” be sure to acknowledge them whenever you pass by, as the energetic “Guardians” behind the idol or symbols respond to your attention.
(I would like to thank Richard Feather Anderson for his insights, wisdom and contributions to my understanding of these elements of Celtic Geomancy.)
