While Feng Shui is the art and science of how we are affected by the built environment and the natural environment, it is also a part of a trilogy of ancient healing modalities.
The other two parts to this healing trilogy are Chinese Astrology and Chinese Medicine.

Each one of these three disciplines contains powerful wisdom and guidance in how we can live our lives in a more balanced, focused, and productive way. Chinese Medicine can tell us what our constitutional health is like and how we can work with our inherent weaknesses, compensating with herbs, food, and acupuncture or other health related solutions. With Chinese Astrology, we have a road map to our lives in terms of when we may be challenged and when our lives will naturally be easier. Chinese Astrology can get very specific and help us make time-appropriate decisions in matters of love, career, and health. And then there is Feng Shui, which reveals how our home or work environment is influencing us.

A theoretical example of all three systems could be something like this: The astrology reading for a person may indicate that health will be challenged between the ages of 25-30 years. The doctor, using diagnostic tools from Chinese medicine may be able to determine what type of health problem can manifest. (Astrology might be able to reveal this as well). Then, the Feng Shui can indicate whether a house will help or hinder the occupant’s health and even predict certain years when the house’s influence will be better or worse for health matters. Putting all these influences together can create a powerful life plan and understanding of what a person needs to do at various junctures in their life.

In the same way that the essence of many religions come to the same ultimate Truths, it is interesting to note that different cultures besides the Chinese, have similar versions of this trilogy. In India, their version of Feng Shui is called Vaastu Shastra. It collaborates with and complements Aryuvedic medicine and Vedic (East-Indian) Astrology.

So much of modern living is now compartmentalized. We are not seeing the connections between major parts of our lives. But everything influences everything else! On the other hand, we are now seeing from an economic, political and environmental stand point, that we are all related and responsible for each other. Sadly, the pollution created in China is now floating over to the west coast of the United States!

With Feng Shui theories and applications, we are continuously looking for the relationship between the cosmos, the human being, and the natural environment. We even have terms such as “heaven luck,” “man luck,” and “earth luck” to describe the various influences on our lives. Our earth’s relationship with the sun and moon are profound and we can also calculate these yang and yin influences on a small scale within a built environment.
