The Kun trigram is recognized symbolically as three broken lines, one on top of the other. It is associated with the earth element and the direction of southwest. People who are the Kun trigram, such as those born in 1944, 1953, 1962, 1971, 1980 and repeating every nine years, can be prone to illness or injury in the abdominal region. Digestive or reproductive problems can be common with Kun trigram people, as well as the spleen.

Kun is the image of flat lands or soft earth, like soil or sand. The Kun trigram is symbolic of the mother in the family structure, and men who happen to be the Kun trigram can be very affectionate, nurturing and sweet.
You may have read about your personal trigram already, and the birth years I just listed would be considered the Kun trigram for only males, if one were adhering only to the Ba Zhai School of Feng Shui. This School is often referred to as well as the Eight Mansion School. Around the beginning of the 8th century, this branch of Feng Shui was altered, to create a different trigram for females born in the same year as males. There is much controversy about this change and few consultants are aware of it or willing to discuss it. Some classical practitioners have gone back to the original determination of the personal trigram, not gender-specific.

To determine the trigram, we have a start date of February 4th or 5th, and not January 1st. For instance, if someone were born January 9th, 1945, they would be considered born in 1944 by the Chinese Solar calendar.

The Kun trigram is sometimes written with an apostrophe, such as K’un. It is the same energy and symbol, just a different dialect.

All of the trigrams are related to periods of time, a specific direction, elements and their colors, seasons, body areas and a member of the nuclear family. Kun is associated with Period 2, the last Period 2 being a time frame between 1884-1903. The next Period 2 cycle will be 2064-2083. Kun is the span of southwest, from 202.5 degrees to 247.5 degrees on the compass. Since Kun is an earth trigram, it is related to colors like yellow, orange and brown. As a season, Kun would be more associated with autumn.

The Kun person can use the direction of the Northeast to attract wealth, such as having that be their sleeping direction or entrance location. This could be considered a personal lucky direction, not yet factoring in the best directions of a building, regardless of who uses it. A building or house will have its own “wealth” areas, based on orientation and then even more precisely based on year built.

For the Kun trigram person, a secondary direction that can help one be successful is the direction of west. An example of this might be for the Kun person to sit at their desk facing west.

The direction of northwest is one which can engender likeability, trust, personal and professional harmony for the Kun person. A politician would benefit from using this “Wu Cu” direction as much as any “wealth” direction.
Within this branch of Feng Shui called Ba Zhai, there are two camps: East Type people and West Type people. The Kun person belongs to the West group and favors the directions of Northeast, West, Northwest and Southwest over the other four major directions of East, Southeast, North and South.
