Bloodstone is also known by its Greek name, which is heliotrope. This form of chalcedony, green colored with inclusions of red iron oxide and jasper, is one of the birthstones for the month of March. Another name for bloodstone is Martyr Stone, so named because of the legend that grew up around its appearance. An explanation for its colors was that blood dripped from Jesus on the cross and stained green jasper on the ground. It has been widely used as a carving stone.

Bloodstone statues often represent Christian martyrs and flagellants and the crucifixion. One of the most notable crucifixion carvings from bloodstone was created by Italian sculptor Matteo del Nassaro in which the bloodstone’s red spots represent drops of Christ’s blood. Other cultures such as the Babylonians and Egyptians also valued bloodstone, which they believed held magical powers. The list of healing properties attributed to bloodstone is a long one. It promotes self-esteem, endurance, and emotional courage. The ancients believed it could make them invisible.

In general, it is regarded by crystals healers as useful in blood-related ailments such as hemorrhaging and menstrual cramps. Bloodstone is mined in India, Brazil, China, Scotland, Siberia, and the U.S. Bronze Age artifacts made of bloodstone have been found in Bulgaria. It is a fine stone for jewelry, cameos, beads, spheres, pyramids, wands, eggs, skulls, and talismans.
