Caylee Anthony"s public memorial service is being held today in Orlando, Florida. Our hearts, prayers and meditations are with her and all those that knew and loved her.

Caylee Anthony has been all over the news and inserted into so many human interest and crime solving stories, that we almost feel as though we knew her. Our grief is poignant.

Why?

Caylee Anthony has come to represent all children who have been murdered. She represents the epitome of man"s inhumanity to man and the sudden, horrific loss that far too many families face upon learning that their child has been tragically taken from them. We see Caylee"s beautiful face and those large, wondering, trusting eyes and our hearts fill with compassion and sorrow. Caylee is dead and we feel this deeply.

Children who are missing - we now see Caylee"s face in our minds. In the hours and weeks after a child is reported to be among the lost, we hope and pray with the family that the child will be returned unscathed. Joyfully, sometimes those children are returned to their daring to be hopeful families.

Usually, however, the ending is a funeral, a memorial service and a whodunit that captures the imaginations of many.

Jon Bennet Ramsey, Caylee Anthony, and, sadly countless others... dead children shrouded in the tears of those who loved them and the mystery of who stole their lives from them. We find ourselves involved in their sagas because of media exposure and, I believe, because we so hope that this disappearance will end in the grateful tears of the families as they embrace their returned and, oh thank God, living child.

We struggle to make sense out of their deaths. We need to blame someone. We need to be our very own judge and jury and decide, usually with few facts to back up our accusations, who the murderer was. We try to find a reason and someone to blame for allowing the child to be exposed to danger in the first place.

Remember when Jessica McClure was pulled, alive, from a well in her back yard in 1987? We clapped and cheered, as she was rescued, along with all of those people who were actually on the scene. Yet, even during the enormous efforts being made to insure that Jessica was alive when she emerged from the well, there was talk about how her Mother had been on the phone when little Jessica fell into the well. Gripes! Haven"t you ever turned your back on a child for a moment or two to answer the phone, to run to get a diaper, to answer the door bell? For goodness sake, if you want to judge Jessica"s Mom or any Mom, go to law school and work your way up to becoming a Judge!

Perhaps Caylee represents to us our shadow places where we, too, have been "negligent" for a second or two...or a week or two! Perhaps Caylee, Jon Bennet Ramsey et all remind us of the tried but true saying, "There but for the grace of God go I!" The only perfect parent I ever met was one who does not have children.

Yet, I digress.

Caylee Anthony"s service today is bound to be moving. We wish she had been allowed to live a long and happy life. We wish that all those who loved her did not have to deal with such an indescribable loss. We wish that Caylee was enjoying her family today rather than being eulogized. We wish there was something we could have done to prevent her death. We wish... we wish...we wish...

Caylee represents high hopes and abandoned hopes. Caylee represents a rather dormant need of ours to be heroes and save all endangered children. Caylee brings us in touch with all that is good about ourselves (compassion, sympathy, a desire to help in some manner, etc..) and all that we are not so proud of as well (the speed with which we judge someone, the times when, perhaps, we did not make very good parenting decisions, etc..).

Caylee Anthony, may she rest in exquisite peace, is the lost and murdered adopted daughter of our nation. She represents all that is "right" about us and...unfortunately...all that is wrong about us.

May we be courageous and right our wrongs. May we love and protect out children and allow tragedy to bring us into the fullness of what and who we can be.
