Jyotish, commonly known in the west today as Vedic Astrology, is one of the original outer sciences of the physical universe, as well as a most important "inner" science, for it deals with the inner mind and the journey of the soul. The planets represent the laws of time and astrology shows the basic language of cosmic energy.

Jyotish is the science of fate, or destiny, thus the understanding of events on earth and for individuals the unfolding of events in their lives. It views man as a microcosm, an indivisible part of the macrocosm of the universe, and is a spiritual science based on the science of transmigration of the soul. Therefore a horoscope will show the karma which one brings to this life from previous births, the spiritual path one has followed and the ultimate purpose one must fulfill in order to transcend the boundaries of this material world.

A horoscope shows the psycho-physical nature of a person and indicates their potentials in all areas of life. This includes their career and means of economic development, their relationships (both marital and otherwise), physical and emotional health and the karmic balance of enjoyment & suffering that must come in due course. Even a person"s ability to perform austerities for spiritual growth and their capacity to perform sadhana, or spiritual practice, will be seen within the birth horoscope.

Armed with such knowledge a person becomes better equipped to be objective in their direction, accepting both the inherent strengths and weaknesses and use their strengths to achieve maximum potential in all areas of life. Measures to be taken may include the use of gems or yantras (sacred geometric diagrams), yet even more importantly may include meditation, chanting of mantras and developing the determination through positive thinking to become disciplined in order to achieve goals on both the material and spiritual spheres of one"s life.

By understanding our true selves we can then use our lives in a positive way with a view to ultimate self-realization, for all Vedic knowledge ultimately points to one thing, which is "atma vidya" or knowledge of the self.

Ayurveda is the branch of Vedic science that deals with the health of the physical body. It includes prescription of proper diet, body work and also surgery, but as importantly includes psychology and spirituality. Being a science of the Vedas it also sees "atma vidya" as the goal of human existence.

Diseases may arise from one of two causes. First are physical or biological (an imbalance of the humors, elements and prime energies of the body), and are treated usually with herbs, diet, body work and specific yoga postures suitable for an individual. In more extreme cases mineral and drug medicines or surgery may be required.

The second cause of disease is karmic. There may be psychological or spiritual causes and it may be seen that these manifest in occupational and emotional problems, also creating great difficulties in a person"s relationships with others. Treatment may require a change in life-style and attitude, as well as some of the same measures prescribed in jyotish such as gems, mantra or yantra.

Often a lack of faith can be the cause of many diseases and common this is also felt as a lack of love, including for oneself. Recognizing that one must follow a spiritual path to at least some degree is essential to healing the mind and body fully, what to speak of the inner consciousness.

The essence of healing is integration. Faith, love, a sense of unity and recognizing the sacred nature of humanity and all life is what is missing in modern medicine. To establish the right rhythm of life there must be creative living, a harmony of self with the universe and with the cosmic force of life. Ayurveda seeks to establish that harmony between body, mind and spirit and thus allow complete balance and total health of one"s being.
