In your opinion, why do synchronistic experiences happen? What, exactly, is going on here?

I believe that our species is at an exciting point in its spiritual evolution. We have shown enough empathy that we have opened ourselves to the wisdom of the universe, which can transcend time and space. This wisdom has always been there, but when our species was mostly engaged in primal acts arising from "us vs. them" survival mentality, we were collectively closed to higher guidance.

Carl Jung, who was a pioneer in the integration of psychology and spirituality, understood that there were external events guiding us towards greater self-awareness, and coined the term "synchronicity" to describe these events. I have spent much of my adult life trying to understand these events, and although I believe their true origin is beyond human comprehension, it has much to do with the spiritual concept that time is an illusion, and events can be orchestrated by entities in spirit form (including our higher selves) which are designed to keep us on our true path.

The key to accessing synchronicity, as with all spiritual wisdom, is to be receptive. I was able to have a very believable experience as an atheist until the age of 29. Everything, in my mind, made sense from an atheistic perspective. But after reading Neale Donald Walsch"s book, Conversations with God, which helped me break free from traditional descriptions of God, I began to open to inexplicable possibilities. Then, after beginning to use Osho Zen Tarot cards, my logical beliefs about how things worked began to break down, because what was happening in the cards (consistent patterns which randomness simply couldn"t explain) informed me that there was something going on which science couldn"t all.

As I began to open up to a guidance, I would notice meaningful letters and numbers on license plates, songs on the radio, billboards, events in TV shows (especially "The Simpsons"), and other external sources. Since I was working as a therapist I could distinguish between my very personal and useful "psychosis" (as traditional medicine would"ve had me believe) vs. delusions that are not helpful and inhibit people from functioning. I believe that my unconscious mind was helping me understand various forms of external guidance because I was yet to discover my true self. I hadn"t yet realized that I was meant to be a spiritual teacher, as opposed to a traditional therapist. Because I embraced the synchronicity that presented itself to me, it continued, and is now an integrated part of my ongoing experiences.

Are there actions we should be taking when a synchronicity happens?

It is important to approach a synchronistic event with an open mind. Your first interpretation may not always be accurate, so stay open, and be willing to interpret from your higher self. On the evening of 9-11-01, after experiencing the collective trauma of the day"s events (trauma usually leads to increased psychic abilities), I channeled an article at Synchronicity Times Online Magazine titled "Four Types of Synchronicity." The four types are: Predictive, Guiding, Reflective, and Ego Testing. Many who have written about synchronicity approach it in a somewhat linear manner: an event happens, you understand it, and follow the guidance. I don"t think it"s that simple. I ask myself, for example, "Is this song that I"m hearing at this moment just reflecting the thoughts I was having a moment ago, or is it guiding me to take some new action?" I don"t believe that we"re here in this life to just follow instructions. Deciphering the complexity of synchronicity helps us to develop our intuition. When our intuitive guidance is clear, then we become less reliant upon external events. For a year or two, when I was first awaking, I experienced synchronistic events many times a day because I needed to get off my very narrow path, and allow my socialized mind to be shattered. These days, I may go a week or two without experiencing any intense external guidance because I feel clearly guided from within.

What precautions should we take when dealing with synchronicity?

Be aware of "Ego Testing" synchronicity. For example, I was once in an "online friendship" with a woman in another country, and experiencing a lot of synchronicity in my daily life at the time. Immediately after receiving an email from her, the song "You"re the Real Thing" by U2 came on and I wanted to believe that she was the real thing, and that her and I were meant to be lovers. My attachment to a particular outcome influenced my interpretation. In reality, it was ultimately a relationship of temporary lessons, and I believe that there were more accurate ways in which I could"ve interpreted that song. At the time, I couldn"t access those insights because of my ego"s desire.

My partner and I recently created Empathic Mystic Online Tarot, which uses synchronicity to help people better understand their life situations. We believe that when people observe these synchronistically arising cards, they should be very cautious of their ego"s first impression. Ego is the collection of our false beliefs, and will try to interpret guidance in a way that makes itself stronger. For example, I once did a reading for someone who was seriously contemplating cheating on his wife. The cards that came up were something like Holding Back, Anxiety and Deception. I asked him to interpret the cards and he said, "I think the cards are saying I should do it." I chuckled and said, "I don"t think so." I already knew at the time that our actions do impact others even when they don"t know about them consciously, and the cards were clearly affirming that having an affair was not the way to go. This incident has stayed with me as an example of how people can allow their ego to interpret guidance to strengthen illusions.

Can you tell me a little about your background as a therapist, and address the common opinion that perception of synchronicity is the product of psychosis? How can someone experiencing frequent synchronicity be sure he/she isn"t cracking up?

I worked as a therapist at a mental health agency, usually with people who were diagnosed with a severe mental illness that was making it hard to function in the world. I had some very spiritually insightful clients, but "mental health" in our society is largely defined by how well you ar able to work, and how well do you get along with the people in your life. However, a spiritual crisis can help someone realize that they really need to shake things up in their relationships because they can no longer live in a suppressed community that doesn"t share feelings. Or they may realize that they need to do more fulfilling work.

If you feel like the character Neo in The Matrix in which you feel like something is wrong, then you need someone like Morpheus or Trinity to help you wake up to who you really are. Without proper guidance, a person going through a spiritual awakening can be labeled as schizophrenic or bi-polar, when they"re actually just realizing (often very intensely) that society is full of many unrewarding illusions. I started to bring my tarot cards to work towards the end of my work as a therapist, which was a sign I wasn"t going to be able to work effectively in a traditional "health" system. So instead of working individually with people, I started writing books and, more recently, making videos at the YouTube channel UnificationNow which explore how to become a more authentic, aware person.

Synchronicity is a wonderful, non-judgmental guide in the process of becoming yourself. No matter what you"ve been through, the universe wants to help you. The only actual difference between a spiritually awake person and a delusional person is a label. In both cases they have started to see that fitting into society isn"t working but, sadly, not many people have good support because most therapists and counselors are taught that exploring spiritual truths is inappropriate for the counseling realm which is supposed to remain more neutral.

When I was telling a counselor I knew as both a former professor and a consultant that I was starting to have intense spiritual experiences, he said, "Make sure you eat three times a day and pay all your bills." It was wise information because the difference between someone like me and someone who is institutionalized often relates to how well are you able to support yourself. I work from home, but if I had to go into a rigid office environment to survive, I would probably have to take medication to suppress the amount of game playing and suppression that exists in most environments. In his song, All This Time, Sting says "Men go crazy in congregations, they only get better one by one." Unless you play by the rules, you will probably get labeled as a deviant by someone. Societal deviants can find spiritual peace within, but those who are incapable of supporting themselves, tend to get medicated or jailed.

Therefore, part of what I teach is about how sensitive people can take care of themselves financially because I can empathize with how hard it is to work in an environment that has a low vibration due to its lack of integrity. I suggest people deal with any lingering emotional issues that exist with family, friends, etc. so that they will know that they are loved for who they really are. When we are honest, and still feel loved by yourself if not anyone else, the universe makes life much easier because our self-esteem will attract clear guidance, which we will then put into action without guilt.

I completely agree that no one fully understands synchronicity. Every time I think I know why a synchronicity has happened or what its particular significance is, it turns out I"m wrong. You can tell something important is happening, but exactly why it"s important is usually unclear. Does this parallel your personal experience?

Yes, it does. Over time I"ve come to understand that although we may desire to understand an event in the moment, it might not make sense for many years. Then, we can look back and say, "Oh...that"s what that Simpsons episode meant!" If we are willing to release our desire to understand an event immediately, a paradox occurs in which it makes sense more readily. Understanding the subtle energies that arise from the spirit realm can take a great deal of silence and stillness. It is easy to live in a state of constant "doing" but I recommend that nearly everyone slows down, and lives with the patience of an immortal. This allows for greater clarity, and increases the likelihood that we will understand what is being presented to us from synchronicity.

Do you personally have any stories of synchronistic experiences that you"d be interested in sharing?

Yes. I"ve had several synchronicities involving tornadoes and "dust devils" which are smaller versions of twisters that occur in the desert (I lived in Arizona prior to California). My maternal grandmother was named Dorothy, my mother Judy, and my sister was the lead in the Wizard of Oz in her school play. When I moved to California it was my own personal version of leaving Kansas for Oz, where strange things I"d never heard of would occur. I actually ended up moving to Santa Cruz. When you contacted me for this interview, you didn"t know I used to live in the home of Good Times, which was a bit of a synchronicity in itself.

Several months prior to moving to Santa Cruz, I was beginning to practice extreme honesty in my relationships because I understood that living in truth would allow for greater "ease" on my spiritual journey. I was a passenger in a car with a male friend, on my way to check out two very run down houses as I was looking for a "fixer upper", considering staying in Phoenix. My friend had previously told me about a time he caught another man kissing his girlfriend, and how he grabbed the guy by the back of his head, and slammed his face against the counter. This made it a bit harder to speak honestly with him about how I sensed that his girlfriend was attracted to me, and that I was attracted to her as well.

Sharing these honest feelings was very intense, and I noticed that outside the car, traveling at the same speed as us, was a dust devil...right there on a major city street which was very rare! It was incredibly bizarre how it kept pace with us. I could feel his strong emotions rising as he was not used to his buddies back in New York saying such things. He stayed relatively calm, though, and we continued on to check out the houses. They were in horrible shape, but I was still open to them since they were so affordable. It turned out that one of them had a "house number" that was the same as my friend"s girlfriend"s birthday. And in the other house, there was a concert ticket stub on the floor, and it had a date on it that was my friend"s birthday. My friend and I were both tripped out by this experience, and I left still considering purchasing one of the houses. Within a few days, the realtor called me and said the city had demolished both the homes! As the extent of the "not meant to be-ness" of my relationship with his girlfriend (and disillusion of my friendship with him) unfolded in the years to come, I increasingly understood the symbolism of neither of those houses being a place that I was meant to live!
