As I experience yet another beautiful seasonal change here in the Rocky Mountains, I breathe the crisp Fall air and marvel at the vibrant colors the leaves are demonstrating. With expectation, their transformation is with ease, grace and beauty. This, along with Spring, is my favorite time of year. I feel more alive during the essence of rebirth and death. Transformation Itself.

At this very moment, my youngest brother is in a major transformational time. The brain cancer abruptly shifted Ken from the late Summer of his life into the late Fall, as his body got weaker and weaker from the many forms of toxic treatments he received. During the last fifteen months of his physical challenge, Ken has lost a great deal of vitality, but not hope. His body is heading into its hibernation, its time of dormancy. They say he no longer has the brain cancer that originally brought him to his knees, but the long months of invasive treatments and hospital stays has drained the life force from his body and his mind through meningitis. The aggressive infection that has taken over can no longer be controlled, and appears to be winning. Doctors are saying they no longer know what to do for him.

As I see the beautiful leaves fall from the trees, now lying on the ground lifeless, no longer filled with the green of health and strength, I think of my brother. Beautiful, but withering, vibrant, yet dying. I know the truth that this is only an illusion. To sustain me during this sad time, I look toward the evergreens that cover our mountains and show their vitality through all seasons, year after year. Moreover, I remember this is the truth of our soul.

In Hinduism, Lord Krishna responded to Arjuna‘s concern of leading the righteous Pandava clan into battle with their kin, the evil sons of Dhritarashtra: “The truly wise mourn neither for the living nor for the dead. Just as the dweller in this body passes through childhood, youth and old age, so at death he merely passes into another kind of body. Bodies are said to die, but That which possesses the body is eternal. It cannot be limited, or destroyed. Death is certain for the born. Rebirth is certain for the dead. You should not grieve for what is unavoidable.”

Therefore, as I enjoy and rejoice at the changing of the seasons, and the magnificence of Fall, I know Winter comes. It too has its own beauty. In my brother’s journey of transformation, he too will soon move into the next stage of his journey, his next season, and his next experience. I remember the Truth that at the core of everything is the soul. The soul never dies, it continues forever and just as the buds and greenery on the trees will reappear in the Spring, our soul continually experiences rebirth through Its many paths.

And so it goes, and so It is!
