Category : Goddesses
Plural form : N/A

Brighid is a Goddess venerated by many Celtic peoples under many names, including Briget, Brigit, Begoibne, Breo-Saghit, Brigantia, Bride, Brid, and Brittania. In Ireland the centre of her worship is in and around the town of Kildare, Co. Kildare. According to the Lebor Gabala Erenn, Brighid is the daughter of the Dagda, the all-father of the Tuatha de Danaan. She marries Bres and brings keening to Ireland when their son Ruadan is killed in battle.

Brighid is associated with cattle, threshholds, childbirth, mid-wivery, and hearthfires. She is also the Mother of the Heath Fire, Mother of the Forge Fire, and Mother of Poetry.

A temple dedicated to her was maintained by eighteen priestesses for over 1500 years. When Ireland became Christian, Brighid was transformed into St. Brighid and the Brigantine nuns established their convent in Kildare.

Begoibne, the woman smith aspect of Brighid, eternally forges the Cauldron of the Dagda in the heart of Croghan Hill near Kildare town.

In Scotland, Brighid is called Mary of the Gael and is venerated as the Virgin Mary"s midwife and the foster mother of Christ. She is invoked in the Highlands to guard cattle and flocks.

Britain derives its name from Brighid and there are many Bride"s Wells in Britain, Ireland, and Scotland. Local people still resort to these wells for healing.
