Palmistry, the art of telling one’s fortune by studying their palm, is also known as chiromancy, cheiromancy, palm reading, and hand analysis. The roots of palmistry began as far back as 200 AD as both Hypocrites and Galen were using palmistry as a health aid.

By evaluating a person’s hand, a palmist can tell many things about their personality, past, and future. There are lines as well as bumps that are read based on their size, quality, and intersection. The most widely taught tradition for palmistry is deep-seated in Greek mythology. In this, each area of the palm and all fingers are related to a Greek god or goddess. For example, the ring finger is associated with Greek god Apollo and therefore the ring finger is associated with art, music, and harmony.

A palmist will look mainly at three distinct lines on the palm: the heart line, the head line, and the life line. The first line examined by the palmist is the heart line. This line is located towards the top of the palm and runs from under the pinky finger towards the thumb. This line represents such heart related matters as emotions and love as well as cardiac health itself. The heart line runs horizontally on top of the head line.

The head line represents your mind and deals with your beliefs, approach to life, and mentality. Below the heart line, the head line runs from between the index finger and thumb towards the outside of the palm. The head line can also point toward a fondness of either a creative or analytical approach (as seen in the right brain vs. the left brain).

The last major line is the life line. This line runs from the bottom of the palm up towards the index finger. This line represents the person’s physical health as well as their general well-being although it is not used to judge someone’s overall life expectancy. It can reflect major changes such as life changing events and even physical injuries. A long, deep life line represents vitality and health. A short, but still deep life line represents vitality, but also the ability to conquer health problems. A shallow, short life line represents someone who is easily controlled by others.

There are other lines that are read including the fate line (near the wrist), the sun line (under the ring finger), and travel lines (horizontal lines opposite the thumb at the bottom of the palm). If you ever get the opportunity to have your palm read by a professional, do it. You may be surprised how much your hand can tell you about yourself.
